Over 75% of high school students like myself do not get enough sleep
because of school hours. Adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 should be
sleeping 8-10 hours per day, however a lot of us don’t even get near that amount
because school starts too early.
Studies have shown that students who don’t get the recommended hours of
sleep lose their ability to succeed dramatically. Some effects of early school
mornings are sleep deprivation which leads to depression, low motivation, poor
academic performance, substance abuse, anxiety, stress, and many more, the
point is students are held back from reaching their full potential academically, mentally, physically, or in general over something that can easily be fixed.
If high schoolers were given shorter school hours we would have more time to
sleep and it would strongly benefit us. More sleep will make us feel more
energized and improve our ability to absorb all the information we are being
taught throughout the day. This should be our teachers, principals, and the
government’s main goal so why hasn’t anything been done to help yet?
