A 10ths grader in South Garland High School, Barbara Sotelo, expresses her excitement for
Halloween coming up soon. She says “I’m so excited, I’m dressing up as a minion”, When asked
about what her least favorite holiday was she states her dislike towards easter, “Since I don’t
celebrate it,it’s really just another day for me.”
Thanksgiving, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, kicks off the season with a day
of gratitude. Many families gather for a traditional meal of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.
Some communities host parades, like the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New
York City, and football games have also become a big part of the day. It’s a time to pause,
reflect, and give thanks for the year’s blessings.
Following Thanksgiving, holiday decorations start going up as people prepare for Christmas.
Celebrated on December 25, Christmas is a major holiday for many. Decorating trees, singing
carols, and exchanging gifts are common traditions. Many people celebrate the religious
aspects of Christmas, attending church services and setting up nativity scenes. For others, it’s
a time to gather with family, share food, and give gifts.
Another holiday celebrated in December is Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. This year,
Hanukkah begins on the evening of December 7 and lasts for eight days. Families light the
menorah, adding a new candle each night, and often exchange small gifts. Traditional foods like
latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts) are enjoyed throughout the holiday.
The New year brings its own traditions. On December 31, many people celebrate with fireworks,
parties, and countdowns. In New York City, the famous ball drop in Times square is watched by
millions. As the clock strikes midnight, people welcome the new year with cheers, resolutions,
and sometimes a kiss to symbolize new beginnings.
With these holidays just around the corner, people across the country are looking forward to
celebrating in unique and meaningful ways. Whether through food, gathering, or festive
decorations, the upcoming season is sure to be filled with joy and tradition
