When Plankton the movie was first announced, it felt like a joke. A full length film centered on the one eye villain from Spongebob Squarepants. But after watching it, I’m here to say it loud, Plankton The Movie is actually way better than anyone expected, and it might just be the most emotionally layered SpongeBob spinoff yet.

Let’s start with the obvious. Yes, it’s hilarious. The movie keeps the classic SpongeBob humor alive with absurd jokes and plenty of references for longtime fans. But what surprised me most was the unexpected depth of Plankton as a character. For years, he’s just been the tiny, grumpy villain obsessed with stealing the Krabby Patty formula. But here, we finally get to understand why.
Plankton: The Movie dives into his backstory, his lonely childhood, his friendship with Mr. Krabs, and his never-ending quest to be seen as more than just “the bad guy.” It’s surprisingly
relatable. Haven’t we all wanted recognition for our efforts at some point? The animation is also a huge win. The visuals are bright, sharp, and full of fun details that make Bikini Bottom feel alive.
And the voice acting? Top-tier. Mr. Lawrence, as always, brings so much personality to Plankton, but even supporting characters like Karen (his computer wife) get a chance to shine. Of course, it’s not perfect. Some of the middle act feels dragged out, and a few jokes miss.
Overall, this movie does something special, it takes a character we all laughed at and gives him real depth without losing the fun.
